CageReady Championships Recap

By Matt Frazier | Knuckle Junkies

A great night of amateur fights at the Alton Eagles. If you haven't been to this venue before, it offers the best of both worlds featuring open air viewing on one complete side, but also is covered preventing any potential weather. This was the first event since 2010 for CageReady Championships after returning from a two year hiatus, and promoter Jason Skelton seemed pleased with the response.

"I was a little nervous before the show started," Skelton said. "I was rusty, its been a while since we last put on a show, but I thought it went great."

The crowd seemed to agree as they were on their feet for most of the main card.

The main event featured fan favorite Cory Tinnon taking on Teddy Snyder. Tinnon looked great early and quickly slapped on a tight guillotine that lasted several minutes. Snyder looked to be in big trouble, and attempted several wild escapes before Tinnon finally let go of the hold. Shortly after, the fight went to the ground and Snyder ended up on top. Tinnon gave up his back and Snyder was able to end the fight with a rear naked choke winning the 145lb CageReady and silencing the crowd.

Ken Porter out of Porter MMA/St. Charles MMA won early with a triangle in the first over Brian Farrell from the nearby I-Fight Club in Alton. Porter looked as if he had a previous engagement starting the fight at a dead sprint. Farrell and Porter quickly wrestled back and forth covering a large portion of the mat before Porter locked on an armbar. Farrell was able to escape, but not before Porter transitioned to a triangle, and was eventually able to get Farrell to tap. Farrell is a very solid fighter and will definitely bounce back better, but in this match he was simply unable to handle Porter's speed and slick ground game.

Anthony Springman and Jason Turner gave the fans their money worth in their "Fan Favorite" match and both fighters left the cage bruised and bloody. In the end it was Turner who had his hand raised, winning by unanimous decision. Turner was throwing heavy hands throughout the fight and seemed to be waiting to catch Springman with that one big shot. Springman attempted to take the fight to the ground multiple times, but Turner was not having it and referee Sal Woods was forced to restart the fight several times throughout. Springman showed a lot of toughness, and while he was not the favorite among the fans, he earned their respect in the end.

SouthSide Fight Club's Demarco Montomery defeated Joe Roye with a guillotine early in the first. Roye had Montgomery in some bad positions, but could not put his opponent away, ultimately it was Montgomery who came out on top when he forced Roye to tap.

Richie Burts was able to catch Jason Washausen in a standing guillotine after the two heavies slugged it out in the middle of the cage before turning the stand-up battle into a grappling match.

Earlier in the night Bo Kunz and Scott Futrell battled to a split decision. Kunz who typically fights higher on the card requested to fight early and was the third match on the bill. The final judge's tally ended 29-28, 29-28, 28-29 for Futrell. The audience seemed to disagree and let the officials hear it. Kunz started the fight with leg kicks hoping to slow down the taller Futrell before highlighting the round with a late takedown. In the second, Futrell was able to reverse another Kunz takedown and landed some very solid shots from the mount before Kunz was able to recover and score his own reversal. In the third Futrell showed that he still had plenty in the gas tank and started picking Kunz a part on the feet before Kunz was able to get the fight to the ground. Both fighters fought incredibly tough, and this decision could have gone either way, however tonight the victory went to Futrell.

Other winners included Watson MMA's Tony Buckowitz winning with a high-arm guillotine. Mike Marshall winning a second round TKO. Allan Cox defeated Jeremy Sanders with a 9-second TKO, and in the first match of the night Clayton Sitzes defeated Jacob Colonna with a TKO in round 3 of a 125lb Muay Thai match.
