Hahn Warrior Weekend Recap

By Matt Frazier | Knuckle Junkies

Hahn's Warrior Weekend wrapped up late Saturday evening with a night of 10 MMA fights and a single kickboxing match. The Hillsboro Civic Center played host to all of the weekend's festivities. Hahn Xtreme Fitness had the majority of the fighters on the card, drawing the largest reaction from the fans in attendance. While loud at times, the crowd was respectful and well-behaved throughout the event.

In the main event, hometown hero Malcolm Smith defeated Demarco Montgomery by TKO due to strikes early in the second. This was Smith's first time fighting at 155 and the cut appeared to fit him nicely. Smith was noticeably stronger than his opponent, controlling the fight both on the ground and while holding his opponent against the cage.

"I felt the best I ever have before a fight. I came out, and I was focused, and everything." said Smith.  "I was strong at 170, for being so small and compact I could still hold my own. Dropping down to 55 is going to be a real good thing."

Smith indicated this would be his last amateur fight with intentions to turn pro in the lightweight division at the next Fight Hard event November 11th.

"Dropping to 55, I had to get through the mental part of it. Now that I've done it, its going to be easy," said Smith.

After the fight, an emotional Smith took to the microphone to thank the Hahn family for all they have done for him.

"They keep me from drinking, they keep me out of trouble. They are with me every day, they're who I go to talk about my problems, and they're going to be the ones behind me, pushing me every step of the way," said Smith. "I really appreciate it because they're doing it for nothing. Just the kindness in their hearts."

In the co-main event, Andrew Sanchez defeated Cory Johnson in a wild fight that saw the two lighter fighters scrambling to gain control. In the second round, Sanchez secured a takedown before grabbing onto the neck of his opponent. Sanchez locked on a nasty guillotine and refused to let go, ending the fight early in the round.

A very popular TJ Casey defated Victor Jordan by TKO in round 1. Jordan attempted to get the fight to the ground several times, but when he was finally successful in doing so, Casey unleashed his ground and pound arsenal and put a quick end to the contest.

Nick Melton was able to stop Zach Gerullis with an armbar in round 2 in a battle of two tall heavyweights. Gerullis continues to improve, but came out on the losing end of this one.

Norton defeated Hague by TKO, Wheetley won by DQ, Swanberg defeated Messmer.

Jeremiah Curtright looked impressive in his victory over Mike Hites in what was a very bloody battle that lasted two rounds before Curtright stopped the fight with a triangle.

Also victorious in the night's only female match was River Warth over Jen Reed. Reed's striking looked solid, but eventually gave up the takedown and was submitted by her opponent.
